Home invasions! Always a scary thing. These movies are close quarters, claustrophobic, and intense. You never know whats going to happen next and you are always wondering why the hell these people are doing this. That's sorta the case with Them (Ils)
I have the feeling that my general "meh" feeling towards Them stems more from being jaded and less from it not being intense. There just weren't to many moments in it that had me going, "Oh shit! You better move your ass or you're gonna die!" I pretty much only had one, and that was when Lucas was making his way back into the barricaded room after the shattered door had stabbed him in the leg.
Them is about Lucas and Clementines night of terror at the hands of "Them". It starts small, obscene phone calls, weird noises outside, TVs turning on for no reason, and eventually turns more menacing as the phone lines are cut and the power is shut off. Once They get into the house and actually start terrorizing the couple in a more personal manner, it gets a little better, but I just cant seem to find the intensity there like in other movies, They just don't seem very intimidating.
The attic scene where one of Them chases Clementine through an area that is being remodeled is pretty good and butt clenching, but at the same time it just sorta screamed set up. I just don't know why you would have so many layers of thick plastic just hanging from the ceiling. Suspension of disbelief, I know.
And them it comes to Them, not Them the movie itself, but Them the people that are causing this night of hell. The big, dramatic, frightening reveal of the movie is that They are actually local school kids. I know its supposed to be scary because they are supposed to be these young innocent children that have snapped and you're supposed to be scared because those kids could be any kids, but it just makes the entire movie lose all the intensity it actually had. I just cant figure out why Lucas didn't just slap them all and send them back to their mommies for being horrid little shits. The kid angle just didn't work for me. If I wanted killer kids done well, I would watch "The Children".
