Stake Land

Holy fuck Stake Land! I loved this movie. Throw vampires and a post apocalyptic movie together, mix in the perfect amount of humanity, top it off with a dash of amazing and you have Stake Land!

A plague is spreading across the world, there are people dying everywhere. Horrible creatures are attacking and slaughtering people then drinking their blood. Martin and his family are preparing to evacuate their home, they don't listen to the reports when they say not to travel at night. Their dog runs off into the night and Martin follows. He hears the baby crying and turns around, a window shatters as his mother is forced through it, she reaches out and warns him to run. He hears screams and follows towards the barn. Slam! He gets tackled. Not by a vampire, but by Mister. He tells Martin his family is dead and the only thing they can do is kill that thing. He hands Martin a gun and they head inside the barn. There they find Martins mother and father dead. The sound of the baby crying being silenced in a gurgle of blood. He gazes into the rafters and spots it chewing on the child's neck. The body of the baby lands on the ground with a thud and as they look back up, nothing. Its nowhere to be found.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, it attacks. Mister stabs it right through the neck, it barely even flinches. He grabs a nearby shovel and lunges it at its face, getting it right in the mouth, splitting its cheeks open. It continues its attack, shrugging off the blow. Mister smashes it in the head with the handle of the shovel and pushes it down onto the cars engine. He slams the hood down on it, pounding repeatedly. The vampire kicks him off, Mister wipes the blood from his nose. Martin finally enters the fray, blasting the vamp in the chest with the shotgun. This gives Mister his chance, he stabs the vampire in the heart and pins him into the hood. The stake didn't make it all the way, he yells at Martin, telling him to get the hammer. Telling him to pound the steak in, he hesitates for a second, and then hammers away. With the thing finally dead, they turn to Martins father, still gurgling up blood. Mister puts him out of his misery.

Fast forward, Martin in football gear, stake in hand, Mister pops open the trunk of their car. A vampire jumps out.... FUCKIN' STAKE LAND!

That opening scene sets up the movie well. The world is empty and it actually feels that way. There are a few settlements here and there, well reinforced and guarded, and the people in these settlements have a great sense of community. They spend their days trading and working, and their nights partying and enjoying each others company.

The vampires in this movie are a force to be reckoned with, each one providing a real threat, easily overpowering and out moving any human. It makes each encounter tense and epic. And while most of the vampires are of the feral variety, there are a few that show human intelligence and even speech.

While most of the communities in Stake Land are peaceful and kind in nature, there is one group that spreads fear and death among their fellow humans. The Brotherhood. This group of vampire worshiping "Christians" believes that God sent the vampires to cleanse the world of filth and sin. They raid and attack communities by aiding vampires in infiltration and even outright dropping them in with helicopters. They capture women and rape them only for breeding purposes and use them for labor. They indoctrinate young men and force them to do labor and eventually join in their ranks.

Mister and Martin are heading north to Canada, to New Eden, where there are no vampires and life is fairly normal. Along their way they are joined by Sister, a nun who was saved by two raping members of the Brotherhood by Mister, Belle, a pregnant girl on her way to New Eden, and Willie, ex-Marine called back from the war in the middle east to aid in evacuating and maintaining safe houses.

Of course horrible tragedies happen and in the end we have Mister and Martin on their own again. They come across a little roadside diner near New Eden where they meet Peggy, a young girl around Martins age that has held her own with a crossbow, defending the diner from vampires. Mister finally decides Martin is ready to hold his own without him when he sees Martin working with Peggy to take out some vampires. In the night, Mister leaves them. He leaves Martin a token, his necklace, and the truck. Martin and Peggy make it to New Eden.

Its an amazing movie that really makes its world come alive. The only thing that I wish it had was some information on what happened to Mister at the end.
