Shark Night

From one extreme to another! I figured the best way to follow up my slog through the brutal, violent, puke filled, indie extreme of STPC, would be to go to the opposite end of the spectrum. The over budgeted, super pretty, beautiful people filled, Hollywood popcorn feature. Its a movie not about intensity, but about fun. Shark Night!

I will admit, I have a soft spot for these cheesy, light hearted, Scifi feature style movies. Not nearly as serious as Jaws, but not a comedy. Shark Night maintains a great balance throughout the movie, always keeping it light, always playing shitty funny college music. Just keeping it fun.

A group of college students (of course) is taking a break from all the studying and testing by taking a little weekend vacation at one of the girls (Sara's) lake home. Its been three years since she last visited home and she is sorta nervous about being back. As they arrive to the marina and bait shop, they have a run in with some of the locals.

Maya and Malik are getting things ready to be moved to the boat when Dennis and Red pull up in their truck. Red comments about them being nice for letting "the help" sit in the front, Malik immediately pins Red against the truck and threatens him. Dennis tries to intimidate him, but Sara shows up and fixes the situation. She and Dennis used to be a thing three years ago so she knows how to talk to him and calm him down. The kids go on to their lake island paradise.

Malik is the first to kick off the fun with a little bit of wake boarding. Being a super fit, extreme, college kid, he can of course do a bunch of flips and stuff. Only his fun is going to be ruined soon. Blasting along the surface of the lake, something bashes into his board. Again and again, until finally he splashes down. They circle around to pick him up, but find nothing. They catch a glimpse of him swimming towards the shore and pull in. He lies on the beach, arm torn off, bleeding, passed out. They quickly rig a tourniquet and the resident med student (Nick) dives into the water to find the missing limb.

It's murky. Slithering his way through the kelp and grass, he finally spots the limb among some sunken logs. After he grabs the limb, he spots it. Its massive. Lurking its way through the water, the bull shark circles back around. Swimming in a panic, he splashes his way back toward the dock. Sara rushes to the end, spotting the huge fin in the water. She screams, urging Nick to hurry. He makes it just in time as the shark rips the ladder from the pier.

How did the shark get in the lake? What the hell is going on? Well that all lies in the old relationship between Sara and Dennis. Three years ago Sara tried to break it off with Dennis because she was going off to college. Filled with sorrow and rage, he invites her on one last dive at her favorite spot. During their dive, Sara's oxygen ran out. Giving the signal for help Dennis just swam off, leaving her to drown. She managed to make it to the surface and back to the boat. Firing up the engine, she spun the boat around and got ready to gun it, only she notices that Dennis had surface... and she had brought the propeller into his face. Scared and left for good at the hospital, Dennis had collected these sharks for three years until Sara finally came home.

Through the movie we get a whole bunch of different sharks, and it helps keep things new a fresh. We see one armed Malik kill a hammerhead. A bull shark jumps from the water and tears Blake off his jet ski at full speed from his head. Beth is thrown into an enclosure filled with cookie-cutter sharks that tear chunks of flesh out of her until she finally expires. A caged tiger shark eats the dad from Grounded for Life. And a great white tears up Dennis. There is some more, but come one, need I say them?

Just pop some popcorn, turn off your brain, and enjoy the ride.
