Our hero Ash and his girl Linda are heading out to what they believe to be an abandoned cabin out in the woods. Except its not so abandoned, the woods surrounded by the demonic forces of Candar unleashed when Professor Knowby unknowingly released them when he translated The Book of the Dead.
They arrive and begin enjoying them selves, dancing, singing, playing piano and enjoying a drink or two. As Ash goes into another room to to get a bottle of wine, he happens upon a tape recorder. Curious, Ash plays the recording. On the tape we hear Professor Knowbys translation of the Book. As the tape plays, we see something quickly moving through the woods. Its barrels through the trees towards the cabin, finally crashing through the window where Linda was. Ash rushes to the room, finding nothing but broken glass. Linda gone, Ash works his way into the woods. Linda, possessed, appears and attacks Ash. Stumbling, Ash finds a shovel on the ground and blindly swings. Her head flying from her neck, Lindas body falls to the ground.
From here we watch Ash bury Lindas body and as the night continues, and the demonic forces continue their onslaught, we watch Ash's sanity deteriorate.
My favorite part of the movie would be the laughing scene. You know it, THE laughing scene. Its that damn deer head. Its so creepy! And just the way Ash bobs up and down with the lamp, funny as hell.
Then of course we have the others making their way to the cabin, only to find Ash broken, handless, and wielding a shotgun. Possessions happen, people morph into demonic visages of their former selves, and then die at the hands of our hero Ash.
The effects are great, the way the possessed people look, the Henrietta demon, and finally the thing of evil made flesh. All absolutely awesome. I know that the different color blood was there to get an R rating, but sometimes I wish it would have just been red. I guess it goes with the off the wall craziness of the movie.
And that's how I would describe Evil Dead 2, off the wall, crazy, zany, gory, awesome, horrific slapstick!
Out of the the evil deads, 2 is my favorite. And yes, it's the laughing scene and the lamp. 'OHHH HOHOHO'
