And now back to our regularly scheduled reviews.
You know what I love about slashers? Colorful casts, creative kills, and gore.... also boobies. And while My Bloody Valentine doesn't have the later, it has everything else in spades.
We see two miners making their way through the mine. Pickaxes in hand, they slink their way through the dark, narrow corridors. They reach an open area. Their breathing turns heavy as one begins to unzip their coveralls, revealing a white, lacy bra. The woman then peels off her mask and begins rubbing the mans body and chest. He slams his pick axe into the wall next to her. His breathing gets heavier as she suggestively strokes the hose to his mask. She reaches to take it off, he pushes her hand away. Things start to get hotter and more intense, he caresses the heart tattoo on her breast. Finally he slams he into the pick axe, impaling her. We see a piece of her heart coming out of the wound.
My Bloody Valentine is a great slasher that deserves a spot next to the likes of Friday the 13th and Halloween. It has awesome, brutal, and inventive kills. The killer is frightening and imposing. His breathing through the gas mask creating tension and fear. The cast is good, not your usual mix of overly horny teens, but a group of young men and women, the guys, tough, macho, miners. The girls, not ditsy, super bubbly, and dumb, but intelligent and adult.
As for kills, we got faces being boiled off, bodies in dryers, pick axe through the jaw going through the eye, head impaled on rusty mine shower head, drill through a couple. Lots of good stuff, all brutal, all with a lot of impact.
Its still a slasher, so story isn't much of a focus. We get a love triangle and an old story about Harry Warden, a miner that got trapped in a shaft with some others for days, when they dig him out, he had cannibalized the others and lost his sanity. A year later on Valentines day he slaughtered people, cutting their hearts from their chest and putting them in boxes. This tale is told of course by the doom predicting old man bartender.
In the end, its a good slasher with an end that you could never really expect because it sorta comes out of no where. Turn out the lights, light some candles and snuggle up with someone special and check out My Bloody Valentine.
