The Exorcist III

"But the main thing is the torment of your friend Father Karras as he watches while I rip and cut and mutilate the innocent, his friends, and again, and again, on and on!" Thats why you don't exorcise little girls. Thats why you don't fuck with Captain Howdy. Things like being possessed by serial killers and that very same creature happen to you. And then you know what? You end up in a mental hospital, brains like jelly, for fifteen years, until finally the serial killer inside you has managed to pull your brain back together. Then you know what? He uses you to take control of catatonic old people and then uses THEM to kill people in horrible ways.

All that plus the fact that this is one of the most quotable movies around and you got yourself a winner. Its all supernatural meets crime drama as Lt. Kinderman investigates a series of grisly murders that follow the same M.O. as those of the Gemini Killer that took place fifteen years ago. It simply couldn't be the Gemini, he was caught and killed in the electric chair all those years ago. But the facts are there, all the same little details. Right hand ring finger cut off, Gemini symbol carved in the palm of the left hand. None of this information was told to anyone, but whoever is behind this knows these things.

So besides Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer, how is this movie connected to The Exorcist? Well, the person possessed by the Gemini killer is none other than our beloved Father, Damien Karras. Captain Howdy was pissed off that Damien cast him out of Reagan, so after he possessed the Father and was subsiquently tossed out the window, he allowed the Gemini Killer to slip into his nearly lifeless, Jello brained body. Now after fifteen years of putting the Fathers brain back together, the Gemini can continue his work. But Captain Howdy has added a few people to the Geminis list just to make Father Karras suffer as he watches, helpless, from behind his eyes.

The descriptions of the murders are pretty gruesome, decapitations, heads of statues in place of real heads, crucifictions, draining blood supplies, all kinds of fun stuff! And of course Lt. Kinderman. He is amazing, his rants, his mannerisms. So entertaining. The interrogation scenes between Lt. Kinderman and the possessed Father Karras are amazing. The eloquence. The cunning nature of the killer. The ease of the conversation, flowing from gruesome murder to art without a single misstep. It all works well and makes for a great true-crime style movie.

Of course the way these murders happen doesn't go so well with true-crime. Gemini uses the weak minded and frail old people that wander the facility to do his bidding. I don't know if its easier for him, or just preference, but he uses old women. I know, at first you're thinking, "thats not scary" but the fact that he has random old ladies committing horrible acts of violence against their wills and without their knowledge is pretty frightening. Cutting off peoples heads with giant shears. Snaking tubes through veins and into the heart to drain every last drop of blood from the victim. See old lady Tillotson over there? She did that. Ask her about it. She won't know what you're talking about.

The last connection would be the exorcism scene. Its pretty epic. Not drawn out like other exorcist movies. That priest is pissed and on a mission. He rolls up in their and just starts. Unfortunately for him, whatever he is going up against is both very pissed, and very powerful. Pinning him to the cieling and treating the flesh from his body. Its an awesome scene, showing the power of this thing. It could probably break out of its cell without a problem, but it likes it there, it likes how it does things.

If you liked Seven, The Exorcist, and movies full of great quotes and good characters, check it out.
