The Others
A big creepy house. A somewhat crazy mother. Photosensitive children. Three mysterious servants. And a bunch of bumps in the night. Graces odd rules about drapes being closed and only one door at a time being open are the least of every ones problems in the household. You see, Graces daughter Anne has been seeing people in their home, a little boy named Victor, his parents, and a creepy old woman with foggy eyes. There are ghosts in this house, its theirs, and they don't want to share it with anyone.
The Others is your traditional sort of "haunting" movie. Its got a big old creaky house. Some mysterious and some oddball characters. Great atmosphere. Strange goings on. And some very creepy moments. Its a pretty slow movie, but of course most hauntings are.
First we have Grace and her children, their servants up and left without any reason, any warning. Grace sends an add to the papers for more. Three people arrive about the add, a young mute, the odd meek old man Mr. Tuttle, and their leader, Mrs. Mills. They are shown around the house and Grace tells them of her rules: never open a door without closing the previous one and always keep the drapes shut. She does so because her children are photosensitive.
During one night, the drapes in the children's rooms keep opening. Anne tells Nicholaus that it is Victor, the young boy that she sees around the house. He gets scared, accusing her of lying, that she's just teasing him. She yells at him, swearing that she was telling the truth. She argues with Victor, pleading that he shows himself, that he proves he was there by touching his face... but as she argues with Victor he speaks through her. Makes me wonder if crazy just runs in the family.
The families father isn't around. He went off to the front to defend his country. This of course had some ill effects on the family. The mom went a little insane and did something that no one speaks of. The kids always ask where their daddy is. Everyone misses him. Grace heads out one day to go talk to the priest about blessing their house because of the recent ghostly crying and bumps and whispers. She cuts her way through the foggy forest, but as she continues on the fog only grows thicker and deeper. She sees a figure wading through the this vapour, he clunks his sack down and stands hazy, dead in the eyes.. Her husband.
He stays a few days, but never leaves his room. He lies there, acting broken. War is hell, but he never came back. He finally tells Grace that he has to leave for the line again and goes off. More and more strange things happen. Finally it comes to a head, gravestones are found with the names of the servants in them, their pictures torn from a "book of the dead" found in a storage room. The children flee from them, but end up in a room with Victor and the others.... some twists, some plot turns, and we have a pretty enticing and good haunting flick.
I loved the film quality, I loved the atmosphere, and I liked where it ended up going.
